Pleasant Calloway Ferguson owned the farm adjacent to Moses Monda Hough and had previously been married. When he returned from the Civil War, his wife had died and he soon married his neighbor's daughter Clearentine. A daughter by his first wife married Moses Monda Hough's son.

He was born in Lancaster Co., SC but resided in Mecklenburg Co., NC when he enlisted in Union Co., NC at age 35 on March 13, 1862. He was captured at Hatcher's Run, VA on March 31, 1865 and was confined at Point Lookout, MD until his release on June 26, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
